Stop, wait and regulate
Your nervous system needs a minute.
It is feeling a pain that resurfaces shame
Where you felt perilous and uncertain
You were just a child when this trigger began
A child needing comfort as your safety ran;
Away from your body, your mind and your heart.
That where insecurity found its way to start
Now you scramble for certainty once again
Needing surety to ease the pain.
You need a minute to balance your system
So take a deep breath and be sure to listen;
to the facts that present themselves in each situation
Take a while to look at them, without the frustration.
Remind yourself about what you want to achieve
Is the person in front of you trying to deceive?
Are you relating this to a moment in your past?
A moment that you couldn’t wait to pass.
And now its back and you face it again.
And all the hard work goes up in flames.
You want to be safe so you fight and fight
Or you take the high road and set off in flight
But remember something, you’ve gone through this before,
And if it goes the same way, you can show them the door.
You’ve got the strength , the love, the capability
To handle these reactions without fragility.
A calm reaction to triggers take time
Getting to that place is a bit of a climb
You can do the work with the support that you need
With the goal in mind that you will succeed.
Align your goals with your boundaries and morals.
And work each day for a better tomorrow.
